🕉️ History of Vande Mataram

“Vande Mataram,” meaning “I bow to thee, Mother,” is one of the most powerful patriotic songs ever written in Indian history. It was composed by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in 1870 and later included in his novel Anandamath (1882). The song glorifies India as the divine mother — filled with rivers, fields, and the beauty of nature.

During the Indian freedom struggle, “Vande Mataram” became the mantra of revolution. Freedom fighters like Bipin Chandra Pal, Lala Lajpat Rai, and Subhas Chandra Bose drew strength from it. The song was first sung in 1896 at the Indian National Congress session by Rabindranath Tagore.

In 1950, the Constituent Assembly of India declared “Vande Mataram” as the National Song of India, giving it equal honor to the National Anthem.
